In 1996, while in the midst of growing a new technology company in Los Angeles, a faint meow echoed under my house. Midnight … exhausted… I grabbed a flashlight, popped the screen off the tiny access hole and crawled on my belly through all the yuck and muck under the house to find a little mewing kitten. The only survivor of 7 kittens … mom had been hit by a car a few days before. Snapped the little guy up … got him warm and cleaned and fed … and little Pumpkin turned into my first rescue kitten… living a happy and loved life until his passing just a few years ago.
Rescuing Pumpkin was a crash course in bottle feeding a kitten, keeping them warm, and getting baby kitteh all the things a baby kitteh needs when mom isn’t around. In 2012, I started fostering rescue litters each January – April in Venice Beach as Venice Beach Kitten Rescue, each year getting more calls as the cat population in Los Angeles continues to grow despite efforts to make LA and NO-KILL City for felines.
In 2017, while staring at 25 foster cats & kittens, several saved from shelters and being euthanized because they were sick … and because there are no resources for the volume of cats in the City Shelters, myself and a group of dedicated rescue cat lovers founded Los Angeles Meow Salvage, a non-profit dedicated to rescuing pregnant cats and cats with new litters from the streets and shelters of LA & surrounding counties.
As part of an amazing network of other cat & kitten non-profits and dedicated fosters – our hope is to rescue, rehabilitate, and place our amazing kittehs in loving forever homes. Our cats and kittens may come in pregnant, in heat with a litter, sick or injured – but they all leave healthy, spayed / neutered, wormed & vaccinated – loved and ready for warm laps and chin scratches.
